Control room and discontinuity with Malagò. Pancalli's decalogue: "Now Coni belongs to everyone"

Control room and discontinuity with Malagò. Pancalli's decalogue: "Now Coni belongs to everyone"

"The CONI needs discontinuity. I was not convinced by Giovanni Malagò's excessive personalization, I would like to appear less but give more space to everyone, especially to the federal presidents who are the architects of successes". Two weeks before the polls that will decree the end of the Malagò era at the top of the Foro Italico, Luca Pancalli announces his manifesto for the next Olympic four-year period. "A CONI for everyone and not just a medal factory" with just one man in command, this is his recipe.

The relationship with politics

And to implement it he thinks of a control room, among the characterizing points of his program: «We are not used to working together . After 2018, Coni had to deal with other entities. We need to sit down together around a table and figure out what to do together». The new actors, needless to say, are those linked to the world of politics, starting with the institution of Sport and Health, which took the place of Coni Servizi, with the top management appointed by the government and no longer by Palazzo H. Pancalli has always supported the need to dialogue with politics, but rejects the label – «which mortifies me a little» – of being the candidate of politics .

There are eight candidates competing for the presidency of CONI, but Pancalli is undoubtedly the most disliked by the outgoing president. The others are Franco Carraro , former president of CONI from 1978 to 1987, president of the Football Federation, minister and mayor of Rome just to mention his most prestigious positions – the number one of the Canoe Federation Luciano Buonfiglio and then a series of testimonial candidacies such as Duccio Bartalucci , Mauro Checcoli , Pierluigi Giancamilli , Carlo Iannelli and Giuseppe Macchiarola .

The moves of Barelli and Binaghi

Of these, Pancalli is certainly the furthest from the current governance. "I have always had excellent relations with Giovanni, he leaves an image of a Coni world that has identified itself very much with him. He had an extraordinary ability to relate and stage presence". Pancalli, on the other hand, would like to "appear much less but try to give more space to everyone, especially to the federal presidents who are the architects of the results of Italian sport , give space to those who work - he added - I have to be a man behind the scenes who tries to put those who bring the results in the best conditions". As for the return of Angelo Binaghi and Paolo Barelli (Malagò's historical antagonists) to the National Council, he underlined: "With them we are carrying on a productive discussion, I don't think it will be difficult to involve them again in the life of Italian sport".

No appeal against Carraro

In a press conference, Pancalli also explained why he did not appeal Carraro's candidacy, which had already received a rejection, albeit non-binding, from the Minister of Sport Andrea Abodi , regarding the limit of three mandates provided by law: "I am used to being an athlete. As an athlete, I happened to have a main competitor who was disqualified. That victory was bitter because I like competition on the field."

Asked if he feels favored, he then replied: "I feel like a sports manager engaged in a challenge, I look at myself and the team that is accompanying me. We work towards a goal, I don't think about strategies. The testimonies that come back to me in the comparison with the electorate make me optimistic". As for the choice of the general secretary, Pancalli said: "I will talk about it with my staff and with the electorate that is supporting me in this campaign". Free hands, especially after having seen so many eyebrows raised in front of the preventive confirmation of Carlo Mornati by Carraro.
